PhD Students – Prospective students are encouraged to apply to the Gangarosa Environmental Health Sciences (EHS) PhD program in the Rollins School of Public Health or the Population Biology, Ecology, and Evolution (PBEE) PhD program through the GDBBS.
MPH Students – Dr. Nadimpalli can advise thesis or rotation students affiliated with Environmental Health, Global Health, or Epidemiology.
Rollins MPH students can apply for open job postings on RSPH Career Connection.
Our lab is actively recruiting one PhD student to join our team starting in August 2027, for a fully funded 4-year position focused on diet, exposomics, and the gut microbiome. The deadline to apply to the EHS or PBEE PhD programs is December 1, 2026. Position details are below. Interested students should contact Dr. Nadimpalli for an informal conversation.
PhD Opportunity in Diet, Exposomics, and the Gut Microbiome
Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia, USA
The Nadimpalli Lab in the Gangarosa Department of Environmental Health at Emory University is recruiting one PhD student to join our team. Our research uses genomic, epidemiologic, and environmental microbiology approaches to understand how the food we eat affects our health, with a particular focus on the gut microbiome.
The PhD student will lead research at the intersection of diet, exposomics, and the gut microbiome, using multi-omics data from new and existing cohorts to investigate how environmental chemicals, including heavy metals, antibiotic residues, and disinfectants, may affect the gut microbiome and select for antibiotic resistance. Opportunities for experimental wet-lab research may also be available.
Desired qualifications
We are looking for a motivated student with:
• Passion for working with large datasets and proficiency in R
• Experience with bioinformatics and/or high-performance computing environments
• Interest in microbiome research, antimicrobial resistance, environmental health, food systems, and/or One Health
• Prior experience in epidemiology (preferred)
Applicants with a Master's degree and/or peer-reviewed publications will be given priority consideration.
Training Environment
The successful student will join Emory's Environmental Health Sciences PhD Program in the Rollins School of Public Health. This top-ranked program provides interdisciplinary training in environmental determinants of health and disease and offers exceptional research opportunities through collaborations across Emory and Atlanta-based public health institutions, including the U.S. CDC, which is located right next door. Many of our faculty are leaders in exposure science, epidemiology, infectious diseases, and multi-omics research, and our department provides a highly unique and supportive environment to learn how to apply these high-dimensional data approaches to uncover novel drivers of human health and infectious disease.
How to Apply
Interested students are encouraged to contact Maya Nadimpalli (maya.l.nadimpalli@emory.edu) for an informal discussion about the position and the PhD program.
